Chrysler PT Cruiser head gasket

The 2.4 litre DOHC engine fitted from around 2005 will be found to have a head gasket clearly marked 2.0L 04884407AA C 21605. The two engines share a common head gasket. The year of engine manufacture is established by the first number of the engine number in small type at the very rear of the block at the head gasket height. Ie 5T…is 2005. 6T..is 2006 etc.

This gasket is not yet available from the “after market” suppliers. But they are supplying a VRS with a verbal warning to check the head gasket as a variation exists. Note also that the after market head bolts (supplied with their wrong VRS) are also wrong. Bolts are genuine only at $14.00 each.

The difference is at the oil drain back shape in the later model head gasket design. To detect this make sure the two gaskets get placed together or you run the risk of missing the difference.

The symptoms after fitting the wrong gasket is an embarrassing spray of oil pushed out the side between cylinders 3 & 4 at the rear of the engine in the front wheel drive model.

The engine had to come out to fix it using a genuine gasket.
