Running in procedures

RUNNING IN

Lubricating oils contain a blend of additives, some of which prevent wear.

Present day cylinder components are designed & manufactured to give extended engine life by reducing the effects of wear. The combined effect of these conditions, delay the normal bedding of pistons, piston rings &cylinder bores, which in turn delays the achievement of normal engine efficiency, and , in extreme cases can produce excessive oil consumption, this damage can occur in the first hour of running.

It is important that controlled wear occurs between piston, piston rings &cylinder bores during the initial running period, & for that purpose the following precautions are recommended.

NORMALLY ASPIRED ENGINES

  1. To assist, engine running in initial fills or running in oil should be used.
  2. Do not idle the engine for protracted periods during the running in period.
  3. Work the engine normally, but vary engine speeds if out on the open road.
  4. Peak RPM to be reduced to a minimum.
  5. Maintain optimum coolant temperature & oil pressure.
  6. Remove the initial fill oil and replaced with a recommended lubricant after the running in period, as recommended by your oil supplier.

TURBO CHARGED ENGINES

1.To assist, engine running in initials fills or running in oil should be used that also accommodates turbo charger requirements

2.Items 2,3,4,5, &6 as for normally aspired engines.

DEISEL ENGINES

1.To assist, engine running in initials fills or running in oil should be used that is suitable for the specific engine requirements.

2.Do not idle the engine for protracted periods during running in period & testing.

3.Check and maintain optimum coolant temperature & oil pressure.

4.run the engine for 30-60 minuets @1/4 load & ¾ rpm observing item 3.

5.run the engine for a further 2 hours @ ½ load & ¾ rpm observing item 3.

6.Remove the initial fill oil and replace with recommended lubricant after the running in period, as recommended by your oil supplier.

Failure to comply with the above recommendations can initiate bore glazing , &after a period of time , bore polishing , with attendant excessive oil consumption .it may also void engine warranty.

Note-a fuel additive is available to aid in the bedding in period and/or deglazing.
